Mother and Baby
Most of us expect to fall in love with our new-born but this is not always the case. Perhaps you look at your baby and feel empty, overwhelmed or scared. At the time this may feel bewildering and distressing.
It may feel hard to acknowledge that sometimes we need help to love our baby when the anticipated feelings don’t come and the attachment and bonding become disturbed. This may be as a result of post-natal depression or relate to current difficulties in your life. It could also be that complicated feelings are activated by the birth relating to experiences and memories from your past and your own parental relationships.
At Rafan House, we are acutely sensitive to the vulnerabilities of the pre- and post-natal period. Our highly-trained and experienced therapists can offer compassionate psychotherapeutic interventions at this delicate time.
- I can't tell what my baby wants and I feel so helpless.
- Life is never going to be the same. I feel so responsible and there's no turning back.
- All I can think is that my baby is taking and taking and I'm getting no response back. I feel lonely and unappreciated.
- When I look at my baby I feel nothing but emptiness.
- When my baby is unhappy and crying and crying, I feel panicky and overwhelmed. I want to run away.
- I can't seem to love my baby. What do I do?
